The main component of TIG welding electrode, also known as TIG welding rod, is tungsten. Tungsten is a high-temperature and corrosion-resistant metal with excellent conductivity and thermal stability. The outer coating of the TIG welding rod is typically made of pure tungsten or contains small amounts of other alloying elements. These alloying elements can enhance the tungsten electrode's performance, making it more adaptable to different welding materials and requirements. During the welding process, the tungsten electrode does not melt but serves as the arc generator, providing heat and guiding the arc to the welding area.
The relationship between welding current (A) and electrode diameter can be estimated using the following empirical formulas:
| TIG Welding Rod Diameter (mm) | Recommended Welding Current Range (Amp) | Applicable Materials |
| 1.6 | 20 - 60 | Stainless Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Copper |
| 2 | 40 - 80 | Stainless Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Copper |
| 2.4 | 60 - 120 | Stainless Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Copper, Aluminum |
| 3.2 | 100 - 200 | Stainless Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Copper, Aluminum |
| 4 | 150 - 250 | Stainless Steel, Low Alloy Steel, Copper, Aluminum |
